Chapter Twenty

LUCIAN

I find Prince John inside his bed chamber, rooting through one of the countless jewelry boxes. “I was told there’s an emergency, Your Highness?”

He whirls around, angrily placing new rings on his fingers as he strides up to me. “I have been robbed, Sheriff! Fucking robbed!”

“Robbed? What about your royal guards?”

He throws his arms out, eyes wild. “They’re all dead except for one.”

I grow still. “Your royal guards were killed?”

Prince John doesn’t respond. Shouldering past, he leaves the room. I have to jog to catch up to him. “It’s that man ‘Robin Hood.’ I want him dead!” He spins around just outside the great hall. “I want him more than dead. Death is too easy. I want him tortured for hours, days, weeks.”

I frown, waiting for him to stop raging.

“I want his pubes plucked from their roots and his balls removed. I want his nails pulled out and shoved into his eyeballs. I want his nose cut from his head and used as a door stopper. I want… I want…” He throws his arms out before spinning around and entering the grand hall. “I don’t know what I want. But I need him to be in more agony than he would be in if he was dispatched to the fiery pits of hell. How dare he rob the king?! THE KING!”

“Can you explain what happened?”

Prince John plops down at the head of the long table and reaches for a bowl of blueberries. “I was traveling in the royal carriage when I suddenly heard a commotion. They broke the window on the carriage door and opened it from the outside. They stole my gold.” He pops a handful of blueberries in his mouth. When he speaks, his lips are stained blue. “They took my rings, too.”

I watch him sob with his mouth full of berries, fat tears rolling down his cheeks.

“My rings! They even robbed me of the gold chains around my neck.”

Pulling out a chair, I lower myself down. Prince John keeps eating his berries, his fingers turning blue from the juice when he gropes inside the wooden bowl.

He lifts his hand and clicks his fingers, making a servant run up to us. “Bring me my crown. If you lose it, steal it, or even so much as breathe on it, I’ll have you beheaded.”

The man scurries away.

I scratch the back of my head. “Did you see who they were?”

“It was that infamous Robin Hood the soldiers talk about.”

Placing my elbows on the table, I ask, “Why didn’t he kill you?”

It’s a legit question. Robbing the king is punishable by death, so why would they rob him and leave him alive?

Prince John is practically vibrating with rage. Whoever this Robin Hood person is, he’s got a death wish.

Now he’s the most wanted man in the country.

The servant returns, and Prince John snatches the crown, placing it on his head. He’s instantly soothed, back to feeling in control. “I need you to find him and bring him to me, Sheriff. I want him alive.
